Geography

Taiga is the world's largest terrestrial biome. A biome is a land characterized by prevailing animals and plants along with a predictable climate trend. The Taiga biome covers North America most of inland Canada and Alaska as well as parts of the extreme northern continental United States (especially northern Minnesota, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, northern Wisconsin, Upstate New York,Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine) and in Eurasia most of Sweden, Finland, inland Norway, much of Russia, northern Kazakhstan, northern Mongolia, and northern Japan. Despite the span of the biome, we believe that Moscow, Russia will be an ideal place to set up an ecotourism spot.

Types of Taiga

Picture
There are two major types of taiga. The southern part of taiga is called the closed canopy. This part consists of many closely-spaced trees along with a mossy ground cover. In the lands without the trees, shrubs and wildflowers, such as fireweed, are common. The northern part of taiga is called the lichen woodland aor sparse taiga. It is characterized by trees that are farther apart from each other and a thick lichen ground cover. This type of taiga is generally found in the northernmost part of taiga's biome.

Climate in Taiga

Picture

The taiga climate is for the most part dominated by cold arctic air. Exceptionally cold winds bring bitterly cold air from the Arctic Circle: the temperatures fall even more on clear nights when there is no cloud cover. Because of earth's tilt, the taiga is turned away from the sun in the winter. Less of the sun's radiation reaches the ground to warm it up. Some of the limiting reactants are the lack of proper nutritious soil and harsh winters to support many species of animals and plant.

The average temperature per year is 32°F (0°C) The average temperature for the summer can be over 50°F (10°C). The average winter temperature is under 26.6°F (-3°C). The highest temperature for the taiga biome has been 104°F (-60°C). Despite these temperature swings, many people still reside in this biome, especially in Moscow.
